Facing pages

Book beside film

A comparison of methods, not a scene checklist. The left page is what prose can afford. The right page is what a feature has to invent or leave out.

On the page

The length of a school year

A novel can linger on lessons, detentions, and the slow suspicion that something is wrong. A year feels like a year because ordinary weeks are allowed on the page.

On the screen

The length of a school year

A feature compresses a year into an evening. The plot beads remain. The weeks between them often vanish, so the castle can feel like a series of set pieces.

Neither pace is a mistake. They are different instruments. Missing a side plot on screen is often a runtime choice, not a denial that the chapter exists.

Where a guess lives

Prose can sit inside a teenager's wrong theory. You watch the mistake form, which is most of the pleasure of a mystery term.

On the screen

Where a guess lives

A film puts the guess on a face, in a line, or in music. Interiority becomes performance. Some wrong theories simply never get spoken.

When a film seems to 'skip the mystery,' it may have skipped the thinking and kept the reveal.

The width of a year group

Pages have room for classmates who matter once: a name in a corridor, a joke, a background courage. The school feels populated.

On the screen

The width of a year group

Screen time concentrates on a handful of faces. The house system remains, but many students become costumes in a crowd.

That narrowing changes the politics of the school. A story about a community and a story about a trio are related, not identical.

How a made-up sport looks

The page describes an unfair game and lets you imagine the muddle of brooms. The rules do the comedy.

How a made-up sport looks

Films had to invent camera grammar for a sport with no footage: speed, hoops, a stadium in the sky. The look became canonical for a generation that met the game on screen first.

A visual invention can be faithful in spirit and still be new. The snitch's sparkle is a design, not a quotation.

How late chapters fit a feature

Later novels run long. They can afford several endings: a private loss, a public battle, a conversation after.

How late chapters fit a feature

The last book becomes two films, and even then chooses a tighter climax. Some conversations shrink to a look.

Compare shape, not a checklist of scenes. Ask what emotional beat survived, not which sentence was cut.

Who assigns the color

Readers dress the houses themselves. Scarlet and gold, green and silver, blue and bronze, yellow and black are named, then imagined a hundred ways.

On the screen

Who assigns the color

Costumes and stone lock a palette. House identity becomes a dye lot you can buy. That is powerful, and it crowds out other mental pictures.

This site borrows the four color families because they are how a generation sees the houses. The dyeing is still an adaptation.
