Where to Find Them
Film canon
A magizoologist, a case that will not stay closed, and a city that is not supposed to see any of it.
The first creature film puts Newt Scamander in 1920s New York with a suitcase that is larger than luggage. Beasts get out. A baker with no magic, Jacob Kowalski, becomes the witness the statute cannot quite erase. The American congress, MACUSA, is busy hunting a threat inside the city and has no patience for a British tourist who treats rare animals as colleagues.
The threat has a name the films invent for this serial: an obscurus, the violent residue of a magical child forced to crush that magic. A quiet orphan and a powerful official turn out to be the same tragedy wearing two faces. The film’s ending is a restored street, a thunderbird over the skyline, and a baker who is allowed to remember. That last kindness is the film’s thesis. It is not a scene from the seven novels.
What carries over from the companion bestiary is the job of the case: niffler, bowtruckle, occamy, a creature each with one trick. What the film adds is a thriller about secrecy. Label the beasts as shared props. Label the obscurus plot as film canon.
