Book 1 · Philosopher’s Stone · Chapter 16
Through the Trapdoor
Did you notice?
The obstacles are a syllabus of the staff: a plant, keys, a chessboard, a troll, a logic puzzle, a mirror. Friendship is divided into jobs. Ron’s chess is the chapter’s sacrifice, played as strategy rather than a speech. Hermione’s puzzle is logic under fire. Harry goes on alone because the tasks were built that way.
Foreshadowing
Tests that only a certain person can pass — a trap designed around a child — become an uncomfortable pattern in how the headmaster plans. The question of whether that is protection or use gets louder every book.
