Book 1 · Philosopher’s Stone · Chapter 7
The Sorting Hat
Did you notice?
The hall is a ceiling and a verdict. The hat is a talking object that negotiates, which means house is not destiny even in the ceremony that pretends to settle it. Notice who is sorted quickly and who argues. A song lists values the rest of the book will test unevenly.
Foreshadowing
The hat’s hesitation about Harry is a seed for a connection the later books describe in darker mechanical terms. Houses as moral costumes get less reliable as Slytherin stops being shorthand for the enemy.
