Werewolves
People who transform under the full moon. The condition is a curse and, in these stories, a pretext for prejudice.
A werewolf is a person most nights and a dangerous animal on a schedule. Wolfsbane can preserve the mind; it does not end the transformation. The books refuse the tidy version where the monster and the neighbor are different characters. They also show a society eager to make the condition unemployable.
Canon fact: lycanthropy is transmitted by a bite and tied to the moon. An animagus, by contrast, chooses an animal shape and is not the same thing. Mixing the two is a common reading error.
