Azkaban

A wizard prison associated with dementors, creatures that feed on happiness and leave a fog of despair.

Azkaban is the punishment the stories reach for when they want exile rather than a fine. Its guards, dementors, are less jailers than a climate. They chill a room and pull at memory. A defense associated with them is the Patronus charm, a concentrated happy memory given form.

The prison is also a moral test of the society that built it. Using despair as a sentence tells you what that government will tolerate. Later pages complicate who was locked up and why. Those complications are plot, and this note stops at the institution.
