The Marauder's Map
An enchanted map of the castle that shows people's locations and was made by four students the novels eventually name.
The map is a piece of student mischief that outgrows its makers. It shows the castle and the people moving through it, including passages the staff would rather keep quiet. It also insults anyone who tries to read it without the right words.
The novels do identify the four students behind it. Treating their nicknames as a permanent unsolved riddle is a first-read pleasure, not an open historical gap. A short settled note in the Margin says the same thing without turning the reveal into a performance.
As an object, the map is the school's best argument that pupils have always known more corridors than the rulebook.
