Contested reading
Does the last platform scene settle the cost, or tidy it?
A later generation stands at the train. Readers disagree about whether that image answers the harm or frames it.
This note gives away a resolved story point
The novels end by jumping ahead to a platform, a next cohort, and a peace solid enough for parents to wave at a scarlet train. One reading says the image is earned: the war's point was that children could be ordinary again. Another says the jump is a kindness the book gives itself, a wide shot that leaves wreckage outside the frame.
Both readings use the same pages. This journal will not crown one. Contested means the text supports an argument and also supports the unease beside it.
If you have not reached that ending, stop here. The rest of the site does not depend on it.
The other side
Epilogues are allowed to be brief. A story about school years can close on a school door without filing every injury. Wanting a longer aftermath is a wish, not proof the wish was promised.
