Protego
A shield charm. It meets another spell in midair more often than it wins a duel by itself.
Protego is the block. In a school that teaches children to throw sparks, a shield is the ethical pair to an attack. The later books let shields grow — larger, shared, sometimes desperate — but the root idea stays: magic can be used to refuse an incoming curse.
A shield is only as good as the moment you raise it. The stories are honest about late blocks.
