Greenhouses
Herbology under glass. Some of the plants scream. Ear protection is a syllabus item.
The greenhouses sit off the castle where dirt is allowed. Herbology is the class that reminds you magic has soil, sap, and bites. Mandrakes are the famous hazard: a cry that knocks you out, a repotting that is also a cure’s raw material in the second year. The houses are numbered. You do not wander into the advanced one for the smell.

- Settled in the storyHow did the Death Eaters get into Hogwarts in the sixth book?
Peeves smashes one cabinet as a favour in book two. A bully vanishes into it in book five and comes back with a story. By book six, Draco Malfoy has turned the pair into the hole in Hogwarts' defences.
Theories that touch this ground
- SpeculationThe Sorting Hat delays difficult placements to observe longer
The Hat takes extra time with some students not because it struggles to decide, but because it is gathering more information about choices they have not yet made.
- SpeculationThe Trace monitors accidental magic, not wands—underage control is the crime
The Trace detects loss of control, not spellcasting. It flags when young wizards let magic slip, which is why rule-followers get caught and purebloods raised among adults do not.
- SpeculationThe Veil separates only perception, not state—death occurred before entry
The Veil in the Department of Mysteries is not an execution device but a monument where observers experience severance from someone already gone.
