The grounds, charted

The Marauder’s Map

Not the film’s map, and not the one the twins handed over — this journal’s own chart of the school and its grounds, drawn plainly and pinned honestly. Fifteen places stand on it. Touch one and the journal opens what it knows about that ground: the long lore note, the clue threads that pass through, and the theories that touch it. Spoilers stay behind the usual veil, set by how far you have read.

Astronomy tower

The high class for stars, and a height the later books will not treat as neutral.

Astronomy is taught at night because the subject is the sky. The tower is the castle’s tallest ordinary excuse to be outside after curfew. On a first reading it is a classroom with a drop. On a reread it is a place you already know the series is willing to use. The diagram marks the height. The event stays gated.

Every place on the plan

Castle

  • Great Hall

The long room of feasts, sorting, and ceiling weather.

  • Library

Stacks, a restricted section, and a librarian who treats silence as a subject.

  • Gryffindor Tower

A common room behind a portrait, high enough that the house’s nerve has a staircase.

  • Dungeons

Potions classrooms and the Slytherin common room, under the lake’s idea of daylight.

  • Hospital wing

Bones, boils, and the nurse who has seen every excuse.

  • Astronomy tower

The high class for stars, and a height the later books will not treat as neutral.

  • Owlery

A tower of perches, droppings, and outgoing post.

Grounds

  • Greenhouses

Herbology under glass. Some of the plants scream. Ear protection is a syllabus item.

  • Quidditch pitch

A stadium in a field. Hoops, brooms, and house colors with an audience.

  • The lake

Black water at the castle’s foot. Merpeople below, and a giant squid the students treat as scenery.

  • Forbidden Forest

The trees students are told to avoid. Centaurs, spiders, and detentions that ignore the sign.

  • Hagrid’s hut

A wooden house at the tree line. Rock cakes, a crossbow, and secrets with scales.

  • Whomping Willow

A violent tree planted over a secret. The branches hit first and explain never.

  • Gates and carriages

Where the term begins on foot: carriages, and creatures some students cannot see.

  • Paddock

Open ground for creatures class, including a hippogriff that expects a bow.
