Whomping Willow
A violent tree planted over a secret. The branches hit first and explain never.
The Whomping Willow is a security system disguised as landscaping. It attacks anything that comes close. Why the school planted a tree that dangerous is a third-book answer involving a passage and a monthly transformation. Until then it is enough to mark it as a real hazard on the lawn, not a joke plant.

Threads that pass through here
- Settled in the storyWhere did the Half-Blood Prince's spells first appear?
Levicorpus hangs a boy upside down in book five with no author attached. A year later an annotated textbook hands the same spell to Harry, and the trail ends with Snape naming himself — and a memory that explains the name, the spells, and the grudge in a single sitting.
- Settled in the storyWhy did Harry's first Snitch matter in the end?
Snitches are never handled with bare skin before a match, because they remember the first flesh that catches them. The trail runs from a mouth-catch in book one to a will-reading in book seven, and ends on a walk into the forest.
- Settled in the storyHow did the Death Eaters get into Hogwarts in the sixth book?
Peeves smashes one cabinet as a favour in book two. A bully vanishes into it in book five and comes back with a story. By book six, Draco Malfoy has turned the pair into the hole in Hogwarts' defences.
Theories that touch this ground
- SpeculationA hidden economy would leave fingerprints the stories only sketch
Galleons, vaults, and a shopping alley imply taxes, labor, and exchange rates the plot never has to balance.
- SpeculationThe Basilisk survived petrification victims because it never tried to kill them
The Chamber's Basilisk petrified six victims not through accident or luck, but because it was trained to avoid the kill—a safeguard built into the weapon itself.
- SpeculationThe Dementors were never Dark creatures—they enforce the world's rules
Dementors embody a law of magic: those who fragment their soul cannot cast the spell that requires psychological wholeness.
