The lake
Black water at the castle’s foot. Merpeople below, and a giant squid the students treat as scenery.
The lake is the school’s other forest: a habitat with a surface calm enough for first-years to skip stones, and a depth the staff uses when a task needs drowning risk. The squid is almost a pet. The merpeople are a people. Those are different facts, and the books eventually make you notice the difference.
